NEW YORK -- Severe thunderstorms moved through New York and New Jersey on Wednesday evening, causing widespread power outages and other damage.

The storm is now blamed for at least one death in East Orange, New Jersey, where a tree killed a man in his backyard

Storm damage across New York, New Jersey

There were reports of damage across New York and New Jersey after a line of severe thunderstorms raced through.

In Queens, there were reports of downed trees.

There were also downed trees across New Jersey.

In Hawthorne, a massive tree branch pierced the roof of a two-story home on Warburton Avenue. The homeowner told CBS New York's Ali Bauman the branch crashed into two rooms on the second floor of the home. He says no one was hurt, and he and his wife will stay with family for the night.

Thousands of people lost power across the Tri-State Area, and area airports were reporting delays due to the storms.

Power outages in New Jersey, New York

As of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, there were more than 118,000 customers without power across the area. 

Jersey Central Power & Light reported the most outages with 92,624, Orange & Rockland followed with 19,929, Con Edison reported 5,559, PSE&G NJ had 361 and PSEG LI had 199.

By 5 a.m. Thursday, outages were down to 63,352 across the area, with JCP&L still reporting the most at 62,848.

Overnight forecast

Wednesday night: The initial line of extremely volatile weather has moved out of the area. Another round is coming in overnight, but it is less intense. Still cannot rule out an isolated severe storm.

Thursday: Leftover rain wraps up in the morning, and lower humidity and sun fills in, which will help the clean-up efforts. High temp: 86.

Weekend forecast

Friday (Pick of the Week): Sunny, warm and pleasant. Highs near 80.

Saturday: Humid with showers/t'storms likely. Highs in the low 80s.

Sunday (NYC Pride March): Humid with showers around. Highs in the 80s.
