Hearing Planned On Medical Marijuana Regulations In Connecticut
HARTFORD (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has scheduled a hearing on proposed regulations for the state's new medical marijuana law.
Members of the public may testify Monday, beginning at 10 a.m. at the State Office Building in Hartford. They will have the opportunity to speak the wide-ranging package of rules for the program passed by the General Assembly and signed into law last year.
The regulations touched on numerous aspects of the program such as the rights and responsibilities of medical marijuana dispensaries, security requirements for those dispensaries and rules for manufacturing marijuana products.
The Department of Consumer Protection is expected to submit the final regulations to the legislature by July 1.
Connecticut lawmakers approved the medical marijuana bill in May of last year.
Advocates said the Connecticut proposal in its original form went farther than any other state in regulating the drug.
Under the legislation, marijuana is sold in multiple forms at dispensaries, which must have a licensed pharmacist on staff. It would be marketed only to patients authorized to use it. The measure also outlines specific diseases that would be treated by the drug, establishes a registration system for patients and caregivers and restricts cultivating the plant to growers with permits.
