Health Department Stats Show Drop In AIDS Cases In NYC
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Health officials say the number of new AIDS cases in New York City declined by 25 percent in 2011, a possible outcome of improved medical care.
New statistics released Friday show AIDS cases diagnosed for fiscal years 2010 and 2011 fell from 2,969 to 2,225. The data was released as part of the Mayor's Management Report, an annual review of city agencies' operations.
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene disclosed the new statistics on AIDS cases in its performance report.
It says the decrease in AIDS cases reflects an ongoing trend. It also says the trend could stem from efforts aimed at helping New Yorkers diagnosed with HIV to seek care early on.
