Hartford Mayor Now Wants Full Term In Office

HARTFORD, CT (AP) - Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra says he has had a change of plans and now intends to run for a full term.

The former city council president said after he was sworn in last June that he would only serve out the remainder of former mayor Eddie Perez's term. Perez stepped down after his conviction on corruption charges.

But Segarra told WFSB-TV and The Hartford Courant on Sunday that he asked several people he thought might be interested in the position whether they intended to run. They all said no, and he decided that he could handle the job.

He filed papers to run on Friday. The election is next November.

Segarra becomes the third person to announce his candidacy. Democrat Shawn Wooden and J. Stan McCauley have already announced plans to run.
