Harrison, N.J., On PATH To Redevelopment After Station Groundbreaking
HARRISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A new PATH station is expected to be just the beginning of a billion-dollar makeover for Harrison.
On Friday, state and local officials celebrated the start of construction on the $256 million station, which will replace the current 77-year-old facility, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.
"It will accommodate a 10-car platform, allowing more people to move through the PATH system more quickly from here in Harrison," said Gov. Chris Christie.

The station -- which will be located across Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard from the current facility and is expected to completed in 2017 -- will have glass-enclosed entrances, modern elevators and state-of-the-art security, said officials, who added that it will be the centerpiece to redevelopment in the area over the next five to 10 years. Among the other projects in the works are a 1,400-space parking garage, mixed-use commercial and residential buildings and a Hampton Inn hotel, officials said.
"All of those things are things that make New Jersey better," Christie said.
The PATH station project will create 470 construction jobs, he added.
