Harlem Globetrotters To Play First-Ever Game In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Harlem Globetrotters have played 20,000 exhibitions in 120 countries and now for the first time in their 87-year history they will play in Brooklyn.

The team will welcome basketball to the new Barclays Center this weekend.

"For us to be going there Sunday to be one of the opening acts is a dream come true for me," player TNT Maddox said.

To celebrate the occasion, Maddox and her teammates, including 7-foot-8 Tiny Sturgess, Brooklyn native Hammer Harrison, Bronx native Cheese Chisholm, and fan favorite Handles Franklin, dribbled across the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday.

The group made the 1.8-mile trek over the bridge and were welcomed to Brooklyn by Borough President Marty Markowitz.

"Now that I have met the players up close and in person, I can say for sure that this is a team that I really look up to," said Markowitz. "After watching the Globetrotters dish, drive, and dribble across the Brooklyn Bridge, it's clear that their skills are more than just a 'tall tale' and that they stand 'head and shoulders' above the rest."

In honor of their first-ever game in Brooklyn, Markowitz proclaimed Oct. 7 as "Harlem Globetrotters Celebration Day."

Tickets for the game can be purchased here, or at www.barclayscenter.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
