Hamstring Worries Surface Again For NL Batting Leader, Mets' Jose Reyes
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Wherever Jose Reyes goes after this season, whether he re-signs with the Mets or heads somewhere else, his legs will follow.
Reyes dropped a bomb after Tuesday night's 3-2 loss to the Nationals. He's nursing that troublesome left hamstring -- yet again.
"I just came back from a hamstring injury, so it's not the same. Early in the season, I was healthy," explained Reyes. "I just came off the disabled list. I don't want to blow off my leg out there. If I feel good, I'll run like crazy, but right now it's not where it needs to be and I'm not going to go crazy."
Although he said it's "nothing crazy," Reyes acknowledged after going 3 for 4 that he still feels it "sometimes, a little bit."
"Five days ago it was very good," he said. "The other day I felt it a little bit when we played Chicago. ... I feel some tightness in my leg."
Reyes' .333 average is tops in the National League. He'll continue to play despite the setback.
"The other night he hit a ball that in May is a triple. He stopped at second base because he said, 'I can score from second as easily as I can score from third,'" said Mets manager Terry Collins. "And I've emphasized it. I'll be the first one to stand up and say I emphasized the fact that he's got to stay healthy. It's so important for us and for him to keep him in the lineup."
The Mets' spark plug shortstop relies on his legs for almost every facet of his game. And when he's ready, he'll start nabbing bases again.
"When I feel like I can steal, I'm going to do it, because that's a big part of my game," said Reyes. "Every time I get on base, believe me, because I get on base a lot, I want to steal."
As for the batting title? That's not on Reyes' mind.
"I don't think about that. Believe me," he said. "I just want to be on the field and continue to play. When I was playing healthy with no problem, it was kind of fun to be out there on the field. I missed that for a couple of weeks when I hurt my hamstring. So I just want to enjoy the game as much as I can and whatever happens after ... there's still a lot of baseball left, you know?"
