Hamilton Heights Sex Assault Victim Confronts Attacker At Sentencing
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a college student nearly three years ago has been sentenced to 13 years to life in prison.
Lawrence Elliot, 49, said nothing to the victim when he was offered to speak at his sentencing Wednesday.
His victim confronted Elliot in court and told him "the girl I was is gone" and "I want to be, and I will be your last victim.''
The former City College student said she was forced to take a semester off from school and nearly lost her scholarship after the Nov. 11, 2010 attack.
Prosecutors said Elliot approached the woman in the stairwell of her Hamilton Heights apartment building and threatened to shoot her if she screamed or resisted.
Elliot then pushed his way into her apartment where he sexually assaulted her and again threatened to shoot her if she tried to call 911, prosecutors said.
"The defendant sexually assaulted a young woman in the middle of the day, and inside her own home – where she should feel most safe," District Attorney Cy Vance said in a statement which was released last month after Elliot pleaded guilty to predatory sexual assault. "I commend the victim for her bravery, and hope that the defendant's guilty plea will bring her some closure to this horrific ordeal."
Elliot is currently serving a 15-year sentence for selling drugs in an unrelated case.
