NYPD: Gunman Wearing 'Scream' Mask Shoots 2 People In Upper Manhattan
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police say they are searching for gunman who shot two people reportedly while wearing a mask from the horror movie "Scream" early Thursday morning in upper Manhattan.
It happened around 2 a.m. on West 163rd Street near Broadway in Washington Heights.
Police said a 21-year-old man was shot in the stomach, groin and leg. A 17-year-old girl was also shot in the abdomen.
The NYPD said technology, known as ShotSpotter, detected six shots.
"I just heard three gunshots in a row. We were sleeping, and it woke us up, and then we heard all the sirens," one witness told CBS2.
"A loud noise like an explosive," said another. "Scary, unsafe, unprotected."
Both victims were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
One man told DeAngelis he knew the victims and had just talked to the teen.
"I was telling her, personally, to go home, and to everybody," he said. "They decided to stay there."
He also said the shooting left him feeling a bit uneasy about Halloween in the city.
"That privilege is going to be taken away, if things like this happen on Halloween," he said. "It's easy for you to disguise yourself as a killer or as a hero and kill somebody."
"It's crazy, a masked person? I guess it was Halloween also, so that's how they got away with it," resident Jeannette Velazquez added.
"People's motives – it just seems like a wacky time we're living in," said Jacqueline Altamirano, who lives in the building.
Police described the suspect as someone about six feet tall, who was last seen wearing the infamous mask and a green jacket.
Investigators have not released a motive but said there was a some sort of dispute leading up to the shooting.
