PASSAIC, N.J. - A Haledon Borough police officer was accidentally shot at the Passaic County Police Academy Shooting Range Tuesday, authorities said.

The officer was struck following an "accidental discharge" during advanced firearms training.

The officer was rushed to St. Joseph's University Trauma Center in serious but stable condition.

His identity has not been released.

"We wish our officer a speedy recovery and extend our unwavering support during this difficult time. We thank everyone for their love and support, which is greatly appreciated," Haledon Borough Chief of Police Angelo Daniele posted on social media. "The sacrifices and dangers faced by law enforcement officers serve as constant reminders of the challenges inherent in their commitment to serve and protect our communities."

The shooting range is located by the Lambert Castle off Valley Road, which police blocked off all afternoon.

Neighbors say they hear police practice at the range all the time, and they are surprised to hear about the injury.

"It is very concerning, I know they have a shooting range there where they train people," neighbor Janet Kolano said. "It's always under safety precautions, so this being an accident, you just hope and pray."

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident.
