Hackensack Volunteer Group Gets Record Donation

HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) -- A plain old envelope held a record donation for a northern New Jersey volunteer group.

Janet Sharma opened the mail at the Volunteer Center of Bergen County in Hackensack and found a check for $100,000.

The group's record contribution came from a woman who has donated to the center in the past and prefers to remain anonymous.

Sharma said she nearly fell out of her chair.

The money will pay for general operating expenses at the center, which offers a range of volunteer programs. It also will be used to give the staff raises.
