Gunman Shot And Killed By Police In Brooklyn After Pointing Gun At Officers
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A gunman was shot and killed by police after he wounded another man in a Brooklyn auto shop on Monday, police said.
The suspect -- 45-year-old Carl Lastorino -- burst into Peter's Tire and Rim Shop on Linden Boulevard just before 5 p.m. and said "Peter, this is for you," according to police spokesman Paul Browne.
Lastorino then started shooting and struck a 49-year-old victim in the right shoulder and hand, Browne said.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.
Lastorino fled on foot and was confronted by two officers a few blocks away on Flatlands Avenue as he was attempting to enter the back of a livery cab that was parked at the curb, Browne said.
Lastorino had two .38-caliber handguns on him. He had thrown one gun into the backseat of the livery cab and had the other handgun in his hand, police said.
The gunman pointed his gun at the officers who had gotten out of their car to approach him and said he wasn't going to be taken alive, Browne said.
That's when the officers opened fire. Each fired one shot from a distance of about 20 feet. Lastorino was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.
One revolver was recovered next to Lastorino's body and the other handgun was recovered from the backseat of the livery cab, police said.
The man shot in the tire shop was in stable condition.
Neither of the officers, a 39-year-old sergeant and a 22-year-old officer, had been involved in a police shooting before, Browne said.
