Gunman Kills 1 At Paterson Anti-Crime Event

PATERSON, N.J. (WCBS 880/AP) -- Police said a man attending a block party as part of the National Night Out anti-crime initiative was shot and killed in New Jersey's third-largest city.

Paterson police said 39-year-old Robert Godfrey was shot in the head while arguing with another man Tuesday.

Police on Wednesday were searching for Marlon Rochester. The 30-year-old has been charged with Godfrey's murder and weapons offenses.

Lt. Ron Humphrey said witnesses saw the two men arguing loudly when Rochester pulled a gun and shot Godfrey once in the head.

National Night Out was observed across the U.S. as an annual event meant to heighten drug and crime prevention awareness.
