Gunman Convicted Of Shooting, Wounding Police Officer In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A gunman has been found guilty of attempted murder, in a shooting that severely wounded an NYPD officer in Brooklyn last year.
As CBS 2's Dave Carlin reported on Wednesday, Luis Ortiz, 23, was convicted of the attempted murder of Officer Kevin Brennan.
Brennan was shot in the Bushwick Homes public housing development in Williamsburg on Jan. 31, 2012, during a struggle with Ortiz, police said. The bullet lodged at the base of Brennan's skull.
Brennan suffered mild brain damage from the injury and doctors said he lost some of his peripheral vision. But he ultimately recovered and returned to the force.
Brennan testified late last month at Ortiz's trial. He said the last words he heard from Ortiz before losing consciousness were "F**k you, die!"
"He gets up and walks away and the sergeant lies motionless on a stairwell. I question why we give someone like this a trial," said Ed Mullins of the Sergeants Benevolent Association.
Ortiz was also convicted Wednesday of the murder of a robbery victim. He shot and killed Shannon McKinney during a daylight robbery on New Year's Day 2012.
Ortiz faces life in prison without parole.
