Gun Buyback Nets 182 Weapons In Wake Of Officer's Death
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn gun buyback conducted on Saturday netted 182 weapons. The count includes 58 semi-automatic handguns, 1 sawed-off shotgun, 2 assault rifles, and a variety of other firearms.
The most notable weapons were a Tec-9 semi-automatic and an SKS assault rifle complete with a bayonet. Seven of the firearms were loaded.
Those who turned in working guns received a $200 bank card.
A June buyback resulted in 71 guns being turned in.
The buyback was conducted as part of the Operation Gun Stop program which seeks to take illegal firearms off of the street.
The event was held following the shooting death of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski. Authorities say that Figoski was killed with an illegal semi-automatic weapon.
The buyback was held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Cypress Hills, the same Brooklyn neighborhood where Figoski was murdered.
