Grenade Scare Leaves Roadway Shut Down In Ridgefield Park, N.J.
RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A major roadway was shut down in Ridgefield Park, N.J. Sunday afternoon, police found what they thought may have been a hand grenade inside a car.
The man called Ridgefield Park police to the STS Tire Warehouse on Route 46, claiming about someone breaking into his car. Police determined the man did not have a valid driver's license, but allowed him to stay with the car.
Around 40 minutes later, the man waved officers down and began "acting irrational." He rolled up the windows and refused to come out, as he began making "irrational" statements, police said.
The officers thought the man might be a danger to himself and others, so they broke the window and took him way, police said. He was taken from the scene to Bergen Medical Center.
Afterward, police found what looked like a hand grenade in the empty car. Between 15 and 20 houses were evacuated, and Route 46 and some side streets were shut down, police said.
The Bergen County Bomb Squad examined the item, which turned out to be harmless, police said.
