Basements, Streets Flooded By Water Main Break Near NYU In Greenwich Village

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A water main break in Greenwich Village left streets and basements flooded early Wednesday evening.

The main ruptured at the intersection of MacDougal and West 3rd streets, officials told CBS2.

The Department of Environmental Protection said an NYU contractor was working on the street and struck the 12-inch water main, officials said.

Photos from the scene showed the streets inundated in water at the intersection – located in the heart of the NYU campus. Firefighters and utility workers were seen in the photos, which eventually showed the water receding.

Three buildings were affected by the main break – including two NYU buildings and one residential building, officials said.

The basements of the buildings were left flooded.

Water had been shut off late Wednesday, and at least one NYU dorm was also without water, the DEP said.
