Greenburgh Hoping To Deter Speeders By Posting Ticket Stats On Digital Sign
GREENBURGH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The town of Greenburgh is hoping a sign announcing how many speeding tickets it has issued will prompt drivers to tap the brakes.
The digital board on West Hartsdale Avenue reads that 43 tickets were written last week at that location, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.
The idea is to let drivers know there is police enforcement.
"If people felt that there was a police presence, even if there's not a great police presence, it will make them be more careful," said Greenburg Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.
Feiner noted that he's been ticketed in the past and, "I never get a ticket on the same street that I previously got a ticket."
He said the sign should be more effective than a sign that simply tells drivers their speed.
"Most people, after a while, realize there's no police in that area," he said.
Driver Anthony Maucieri said he likes the idea.
"Yeah, sure, I'll hit the brake a little bit," he said.
The town currently has just one sign, but it could buy more in the future.
