Greenburgh Couple Gets Scary Wake-Up Call After Car Crashes Into Home
GREENBURGH, N.Y. (CBS 2) -- It was a terrifying wake-up call in a sleepy New York suburb.
Plenty of damage was caused by a speeding car that crashed through a Westchester home and it all happened while the homeowners were sleeping inside their Greenburgh home.
The neighbors of Victor and Barbara Alleyne were checking to see if they were okay after a pre-dawn visitor turned their house into a drive through. They couple said they thought the house had blown up.
"It was a big boom. I thought it was a gas explosion," Victor told CBS 2's Lou Young.
"It was such a big boom. I thought, like my husband said, the furnace had blown up or something," said Barbara.
The ferocity of the crash caused Con Edison to shut the gas line down because it ruptured under the sidewalk. The crash also took the gas meter off it's base.
Despite the crash, no one was injured in the accident.
The sound got the couple right out of bed and made them step into the main room to see a cloud of dust and debris on the floor. There was so much dust and the smell of gas, they couldn't even see the car, so they ran.
A neighbor said the speeding car set off the motion detectors as it sailed through their yard toward the back of the Alleynes' home.
"It knocked over the bush and came right through the fence," neighbor Anthony Mirando said, showing the tire marks to Young.
As the dust settled, the driver and passenger apparently just sat in the car. The couple says they couldn't believe their eyes.
"Outside it was foggy at the time and they were dazed," Victor said. "They were just sitting in the car."
"And I looked out here and it's just two guys sitting in the car in our family room," Barbara said.
Greenburgh police impounded the car and arrested the driver, identified as 23-year-old Jason Sanchez, of White Plains, for having a suspended license. At least one of his previous tickets are for speeding.
Police said there were no obvious signs of intoxication at the scene, but tests are being done. Additional charges could be forthcoming.
