NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was killed in Queens on Sunday evening after police said she was hit by a cab driver, who took off after the crash.
Police said 26-year-old Sherena Hundalani was walking near a gas station near Junction Boulevard and 63rd Road in Rego Park when a green cab hit her then drove off just after 5 p.m.
Witnesses told CBS2's Reena Roy people ran after the driver as others helped the victim on the sidewalk. A group of several good Samaritans who followed the cab said the man behind the wheel was driving erratically after hitting her until he suddenly came to a stop a block away. That's when one man said he was able to take that driver's keys away and call police.
"I was scared to be honest. I didn't know what was on his mind, what he was going to do," one man said. "I knock, he opened the window and I just took out the key."
"It looked like a scene out of Grand Theft Auto. The guy is driving literally on the sidewalk, for like half the block. It looked like trying to evade somebody," witness Brian Alston added.
The driver, identified as 55-year-old Lakhuinder Singh, was taken into custody for questioning but later released without any charges. His TLC license has been suspended as the investigation continues.
