Bronx's Arthur Avenue Recognized As One Of The 'Great Streets Of America'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New Yorkers who know won't be surprised to hear that Arthur Avenue in the Bronx has been named one of the Great Streets of America.
Dave Greco owns Mike's Deli at the Arthur Avenue Market and said there's no better way to spend a day.
"Because of the botanical garden the Bronx Zoo, Fordham University, you connect the dots, the next corner is Arthur Avenue. So this rectangle is pretty powerful," he told 1010 WINS reporter Andrew Falzon.
Bob from Florida was in town visiting his childhood neighborhood and eating at Mario's restaurant -- something he's been doing since he was a kid.
"I know him since my early teens, even pre-teens, from my family coming here. My father and mother know his father and mother," he said.
The distinction was handed down by the American Planning Association (APA) -- as part of their annual list of Great Places in America -- and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
"This is a tremendous recognition for Arthur Avenue, and The Bronx is proud to celebrate today as this amazing street is named one of the greatest in our nation by the American Planning Association," he said. "The Belmont community is filled with amazing restaurants and shops, and is one of the finest tourist destinations in the region, if not the world. We already knew how great this neighborhood is…but now the rest of the country knows that the best place to be is right here in The Bronx, right here on Arthur Avenue."
The program recognizes "streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces in the United States that demonstrate exceptional character, quality, and planning attributes that enrich communities, facilitate economic growth, and inspire others around the country."
