Great Neck Seeking To Rezone Parts Of Business District, Make Village More Walkable
GREAT NECK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- At a time when many Long Island communities look for ways to grow and expand downtown business districts, the Village of Great Neck is seeking to do the opposite.
Officials say the plan is to rezone sections of downtown to restrict business expansion and allow for more townhouses and single family residences making for a smaller, more walkable village.
Many residents seem to like the idea.

"I've lived in Great Neck all my life and I like the fact that it was a small town," one man told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs. "It's almost become like a mini-Manhattan."
But others are hesitant to support the plan.
"I didn't understand what the meant by, 'more walkable' because I walk the village quite often," another homeowner said. "I think it's compact right now, it's very reachable."
Some residents are concerned that a smaller business district could mean higher property taxes for homeowners, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.
The mayor, meanwhile, said Great Neck is proud of being known as "the old village."
