Police: 3 Teens Found Unconscious At House Party In Long Island Mansion
GREAT NECK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Three teenagers were found unconscious after officers broke up a large house party at a mansion on Long Island, police said.
As CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reported, the Hutt family held a party in their daughter's honor, and invited nearly 100 of her friends to celebrate.
Teenagers came from as far as Connecticut and New Jersey to attend the party at the estimated $6 million mansion on Old Mill Road in Great Neck on Tuesday night, authorities said.
When officers arrived, police said there were over 400 teens at the house. Two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl had to be rushed to the hospital for alcohol poisoning, police said.
The homeowner, 53-year-old Adam Hutt, was issued an appearance ticket for violating the Social Host Law, which forbids anyone over 18 to allow minors to drink alcohol in a home they own or rent.
Attorney, Marc Gann, said the Hutts have five children and the party was for their teenage daughter.
"It was their intention to have a low-key party for one of their kids," Gann said. "I guess through social media, word got out that there was going to be a party and it blew up into something much bigger than anybody anticipated."
The attorney said the parents were the ones who called the police because the party was getting out of control.
"This was a planned party that was nowhere near what it turned into," Gann said.
The family denies serving alcohol at the party.
"They made sure there was no alcohol in their house, they made sure that they had people here watching their children, they had friends over with them, they were at home. They even had people that they had hired as security to keep an eye on kids," Gann said. "They had no intention of anybody being served alcohol, having alcohol, being intoxicated in any way, shape or form."
Gann said any teens who may have been intoxicated were drinking before arriving at the house.
"They're distraught because kids may have gotten hurt on their property, which is not something they wanted," Gann said. "They're distraught because what they thought was going to be a good end of the summer event for their daughter turns into a complete fiasco."
Video from the night shows ambulances arriving to rush unconscious teens to North Shore LIU, but Didi Hutt said there's more to the story.
"This whole thing is way out of line. All the kids who were taken away were not in my house. There was no alcohol in my house, there was water bottles. One-hundred kids were invited to a party, that's it. All these kids came from all over. We don't know them. We don't know who they are, and they show up, and I called ambulances because there were kids falling down outside, and I did the right thing. I got in touch with their parents. This is unbelievable. I have nothing else to say," Hutt said.
Hutt is an attorney, her husband Adam is a hedge fund manager. He has been given a desk appearance, while some in the community called the punishment too lenient -- authorities said it's far from a slap on the wrist.
"You have to understand is that we have to deal with what laws we are given. It's an 'A' misdemeanor , not a slap on the wrist, punishable by up to a year in jail," Det Lt. Richard LeBrun, Nassau County Police, explained.
The elaborate property sits on Old Mill road where some scattered water bottles and energy drinks gave off the odor of alcohol.
Next door neighbor Natalia Stone said kids refused to disperse.
"A lot of police officers were here. Kind of weird that they didn't leave. Kids were hiding behind here," she said.
While the Nassau County District Attorney said they are looking closely at the case, Gann said the parents -- active in their synagogue -- have been punished enough.
The DA has indicated the possibility of upgraded charges.
Hutt is due in First District Court in Hempstead on Sept. 27.
