Grant's Tomb Reducing Days Open To The Public
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - The National Park Service says the General Grant National Memorial, commonly known as Grant's Tomb, in New York City will be reducing the days it is open to the public.
The site on Manhattan's West Side is currently open seven days a week. But after Oct. 2, it will be open five days a week. Superintendent Shirley McKinney said the step was regrettable but necessary to ensure quality visitor experience. Instead of reducing the number of staff, the mausoleum and nearby visitor center will be open fewer days.
The memorial to former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant includes the tomb of Grant and his wife. After he died, more than 90,000 people donated money for the site. The granite and marble structure was completed in 1897 and remains the largest mausoleum in North America.
