Granderson On WFAN: Yankees' Bullpen 'Did A Great Job'

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- The Yankees' Opening Day hero, Curtis Granderson, joined WFAN's Boomer & Carton on Friday to break down what went right for the Bombers.

Granderson snapped a seventh-inning tie with a homer against his former team, giving the Yankees a 6-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the earliest game ever played at Yankee Stadium — and, Brrrr, it felt like it.

"Around the 3rd or 4th inning it got real bad. It started to mist and the wind picked up and I was like, 'Oh man, it's only gonna get worse from this point,'" Granderson said. "But then it kind of calmed down a little bit, the wind died and we were able to make it through. It didn't make anything better, but it didn't get worse."

The outfielder said he wasn't the only hero on Thursday.

"The bullpen did a great job," he said. "We've got some great arms coming out of that bullpen. I think one of the best things yesterday was the ovation that (Rafael) Soriano got and the outcome that he had along with the rest of the guys, Mariano and Joba ... and you know that you have confidence when you turn the ball over the bullpen that these guys can go ahead and get it done."

Sidelined with a strained side since March 22, Granderson made two remarkable catches as New York embarked on its first full season without George Steinbrenner as owner since 1973.

"Obviously New York is a new challenge, but it's a great challenge," said Granderson. "Who wouldn't want to play in the biggest market in probably all of sports? And on one of the most recognizable and best teams, historically, of all time."

Despite being "underdogs," Yankees fans can rejoice. After one game, their team is in first place.

"At least we're 1-0 right now, we're in first place with 161 left to play."
