Man Burned By E-Cigarette At Grand Central Undergoes Skin Graft
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man who was burned by an exploding e-cigarette while working at a wine shop at Grand Central Terminal has undergone a skin graft to treat his injuries.
Otis Gooding, 31, was in surgery for three hours, as skin from his hip was used to cover the burned area on his right thigh.
Gooding's attorney Sanford Rubenstein called on the FDA to ban the products, 1010 WINS Al Jones reported.
"There is a danger and the FDA really has to seriously consider banning the sale of these e-cigarettes, until the manufacturers determine what's causing these explosions," he said.
Rubenstein said the FDA has documented 92 cases of exploding batteries in e-cigarettes.
"He's going through a lot of pain, and I've never seen such a thing," Gooding's younger brother said.
The injuries occurred last Wednesday, when the e-cig in his pocket burst into flames as he spoke with co-workers.
