Gov. Malloy Pushes Gun Control Proposals At Stop In Stamford
STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy last week unveiled his gun control reform proposals.
Malloy called for immediately banning high-capacity ammunition magazines, requiring background checks for the transfer of any firearm and expanding the state's assault weapons ban.
In the days since making his plans known, Malloy received good reviews. An editorial in the New York Times called the governor's proposal common sense.

Malloy has taken his proposals on the road, going from city to town to explain the plan to residents.

At a stop in Stamford on Tuesday, Malloy put his plan into perspective.
"A more perfect solution would be to do it on a national basis, but you never should make the perfect solution the enemy of a better solution and this is better than what we currently have," Malloy said.
The governor added that all eyes are on Connecticut to enact gun law reform, saying "We should be the leaders, not the followers."
"It's time to do something and sooner would be better. On top of which, I think there's a lot of people in the nation looking to Connecticut and saying 'hey, we understand you couldn't do this right away, that there were other things that had to be done, including making sure that the family members had time to speak to the issue.' But we don't want to keep the nation waiting. We should be saying something," said Malloy.
Malloy noted that the legislature and his own appointed commission are equally engaged in coming up with gun control reforms.
Last month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) signed into law the strictest gun control measure in the nation.
The issue of gun control was thrust back into the spotlight following the Dec. 14 shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. that left 26 students and educators dead.
President Obama tapped Vice President Joe Biden to lead a task force on gun violence aimed at coming up with proposals to prevent more mass shootings.
