At the Theodore Roosevelt Park, dozens of volunteers joined Cuomo to pick up bottles, cigarette butts, potato chip bags, and other debris that litters the beach and the bay.
"The Native Americans have a proverb that says we didn't inherit the earth from our parents, we're borrowing it from our children." Cuomo said. "The right thing is to protect it, to improve it, and that's exactly what you're doing."
Joel, a Long Island resident, emphasized the importance of keeping it clean.
"I love this area and I want to make sure it's a healthy fishery. I'm concerned about its health and its cleanliness," he said.
The event was sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and the American Littoral Society, according to published reports.
State Sen. Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. (R-Merrick) also sponsored a cleanup Saturday at Jones Beach State Park. Over 500 children, teenagers and adults came out to volunteer, according to Fuschillo's office.
