Christie Conditionally Vetoes Unemployment Bill
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has conditionally vetoed a bill that would limit the state's ability to recover overpayments of unemployment benefits from individuals who received them.
The bill, passed by the Legislature in June, is intended to prevent improper delays or denials of benefits to laid-off workers.
Christie said Monday he wants to delete provisions that would permit individuals who received overpayment of benefits for any reason other than fraud to keep the payments automatically.
Christie said claimants who receive payments in error are already protected under existing regulations. They allow the director of the labor department's Division of Unemployment to waive repayment in cases of economic hardship.
