Christie, Booker Take 'Ice Bucket Challenge' To Raise Money, Awareness For ALS

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) have gotten in on the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Christie posted a video on his Facebook page Tuesday showing two of his kids dumping a bucket of ice water on his head.

The Ice Bucket Challenge was launched by the ALS Foundation to raise money for fighting ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

"Since I love my two youngest children so much, Patrick and Bridgette will be the ones to take care of the challenge," Christie said.

Christie nominated three other people to complete the challenge within 24 hours or donate $100: Booker, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon.

Booker took Christie up on the officer Wednesday and posted his ice bucket challenge video to YouTube.

"Hi, I'm United States Senator Cory Booker, accepting Chris Christie's challenge," Booker said as he stood in the driveway of his Newark home in shorts and a T-shirt. "Far be it from me to ever let the governor one-up me, so I'm accepting his ice bucket challenge to strike out ALS."

On the balcony above Booker stood his niece, Zelah Booker, and his state director Modia Butler, who together dumped a vat of icy water on his head.

He went on to challenge Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, Paterson Mayor Joey Torres and Camden Mayor Dana Redd to take part.

Fallon also accepted the challenge, and in turn passed it on to the New York Jets. The Jets also took the challenge on Wednesday, ending their last public practice at SUNY Cortland on Wednesday by getting doused — with help from the Cortlandville Fire Department.

The ALS Foundation reports raising $4 million since July 29 thanks to the Ice Bucket Challenge.
