GOP Mayoral Hopeful John Catsimatidis Picks Up Liberal Party Endorsement
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Billionaire Republican businessman John Catsimatidis has won the endorsement of the Liberal Party in the New York City mayoral race.
It offers Catsimatidis the possibility of a spot on November's ballot regardless how his quest for the GOP nomination goes.
Party Chairman Jack Olchin says the party sees Catsimatidis as an "uncommon common man.'' A Greek immigrant, Catsimatidis got his start with the Gristedes grocery chain and then got into oil and real estate.
New York election officials don't keep figures on the Liberal Party's enrollment. It has a history of endorsing both Democrats and Republicans.
The party must gather several thousand petition signatures to get a ballot line.
The party had endorsed publisher Tom Allon before he dropped out of the mayor's race in March.
