Gillibrand Calls For Bill Allocating Federal Funds To Boost Manufacturing
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) announced Monday that she will be sponsoring a bill to spend federal funds for expansion of manufacturing.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, Gillibrand stood on the floor of the Boyce Technologies factory in Long Island City, Queens to announce her sponsorship of the Made in America Manufacturing Communities Act.
The bill would make permanent an earlier Obama administration initiative.
"This program would unlock millions of dollars in federal funds for manufacturing initiatives," Gillibrand said.
The federal dollars, Gillibrand said, are intended to help expand U.S. areas already having a manufacturing base by, among other items, upgrading the infrastructure.
"Like roads and high speed internet, And it would also help us train more workers and give them the skills they need to get these good 21st century manufacturing jobs," Gillibrand said.
Gillibrand said the total pot of money at stake is more than $1 billion.
