Giants, Jets To Wear Helmet Decals To Honor Newtown School Shooting Victims
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The New York Giants will honor with victims of Friday's Newtown, Conn. school shooting rampage with an inscription on the back of each player's helmet during Sunday's game in Atlanta.
To pay tribute to the 26 people killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the shooter's mother who was killed at home, the helmets will all include the initials S.H.E.S.
Joseph Skiba, an equipment manager for the team, tweeted a picture of a helmet Sunday morning, along with the comments "#Giants to honor students and teachers of #SandyHookElementary and community of #Newtown w/S.H.E.S. on back of helmets."
Newtown is about 60 miles northeast of New York City.
According to the NFL Network, the league asked teams to observe a moment of silent reflection prior to the national anthem before this weekend's games.
The Jets will don similar decals on their helmets during their game Monday night in Tennessee.
Newtown, a quaint New England town, is situated between New York and Boston.
The victims will also be honored by the New England Patriots on Sunday with a special helmet decal and by sending up 26 flares over Gillette Stadium to remember the victims of the school shooting.
