Giants Interview Marrone, Eagles To Talk With Coughlin
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Giants have interviewed former Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone for their head coaching job.
The Giants announced Saturday that the current Jacksonville assistant coach met with team president John Mara and general manager Jerry Reese at the Giants' headquarters.
He is the fifth person interviewed since Tom Coughlin stepped down Monday. Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, along with Adam Gase of the Chicago Bears and Teryl Austin of the Detroit Lions also were interviewed.
Gase took the Miami Dolphins job Saturday.
Marrone, 51, was the Jaguars' assistant head coach and offensive line coach. The Jaguars scored 376 points, 127 more than in 2014.
Marrone was the head coach of the Bills in 2013-14, when the team was 6-10 and 9-7, the team's highest win total in 10 years. He opted out of his contract, but did not land a head-coaching job with another team last offseason.
Marrone entered NFL coaching as Jets offensive line coach from 2002-05. From 2006-08, he was offensive coordinator of the Saints under Sean Payton, a former Giants coordinator.
In 2009, Marrone became head coach at Syracuse, a position he held for four seasons.
Meanwhile, the Giants have given the Eagles permission to interview Coughlin, 69, for their head coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports. The interview will likely occur Monday, ESPN reported.
During his farewell news conference Tuesday, Coughlin said he wasn't necessarily done with coaching.
Philadelphia fired coach Chip Kelly on Dec. 29.
