Garth Snow: Isles Will Retain Jack Capuano As Head Coach

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A day after Devils President Lou Lamoriello told reporters that coach Pete DeBoer would be back in New Jersey next season, Islanders general manager Garth Snow told Newsday that coach Jack Capuano will return as well.

"Cappy will be back," Snow told the newspaper. "If we have an opportunity to add to our staff, the way we'd look to add a player, then we'll do that. But I don't expect to change the current staff."

The Islanders' disappointing campaign ended on Sunday with a 4-3 shootout win over the Sabres.

After making the playoffs in 2013 for the first time in six years, New York was expected to return to the postseason. But New York underachieved for the majority of the season, finishing 34-37-11 (79 points) and in last place in the Metropolitan Division.

Only the Panthers and Sabres posted worse records in the Eastern Conference.

In his four seasons as the Islanders' head coach, Capuano is 118-120-39 (.495 winning percentage) with one playoff appearance, a loss to the Penguins in the first round in 2013.

He is the longest-tenured coach in franchise history outside of Al Arbour. According to Newsday, the 47-year-old is now the seventh-longest tenured coach in the NHL.

Capuano was named interim coach of the Islanders on November 15, 2010 after then-head coach Scott Gordon was fired. The organization took the interim tag off of Capuano prior to the 2011-2012 season.
