Gap Apologizes For Children's Ad After Critics Call It Racially Insensitive
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The Gap is apologizing for a children's advertisement after some are calling it racially insensitive.
The image features four young girls between the ages of 5 and 14, Fortune reports. One of the taller Caucasian girls is seen resting her arm on the head of a younger African-American girl.
Critics were quick to accuse the ad of using the younger girl as a "prop" and some drew parallels of the pose dating back to a pre-Civil War South when African-American children were used as arm-stools and footstools.
Gap apologized Tuesday for the ad and said they are working to replace the image with a different photo from the same shoot.
"As a brand with a proud 46 year history of championing diversity and inclusivity, we appreciate the conversation that has taken place and are sorry to anyone we've offended," Gap spokeswoman Debbie Felix said in a statement to Fortune.
