Friends Suspect Pregnant Bay Shore Woman Was Victim Of Revenge Killing
BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A pregnant woman gunned down outside her Long Island home Saturday night may have been targeted by an enemy of her husband, friends say.
Responding to reports of gunfire at 1737 Stein Drive in Bay Shore, police found Milagro Canjura shot multiple times inside her car. She was rushed by ambulance to Southside Hospital, where she and her unborn daughter were pronounced dead.
As CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported, flowers and candles sat over shards of glass in front of the home Monday -- the remnants of a crime that has devastated friends.
"She was an amazing person," said family friend Abigail Rosia. "I cannot say she was a good girl; she was an amazing daughter."
But amid the sadness, there's speculation from those close to Canjura, a 31-year-old telephone technician, about who would target her.
A friend who did not want to be identified believes the killing may be a twisted act of vengeance by an enemy of Canjura's husband, who's in jail.
"She had to pay for something that ... for other people, and that's what happened to her," the woman told Gusoff.
"You just don't do that to a pregnant woman," she added.
That sentiment was echoed by Canjura's landlord, who heard the series of shots Saturday night in her driveway. Maria Martinez told CBS 2 that Canjura should not have had to pay for something her husband may have done to somebody else.
Canjura, she said, had just picked up the mail and was reading letters in her car from her husband when she was fatally shot.
Canjura's parents, who live in Brentwood, said it was too soon to speak publicly. Those who visited their home to pay their respects say Canjura had lost two previous pregnancies, including twins, and was thrilled to be six months pregnant.
Suffolk County police say there was a drive-by shooting on the block recently, but it was not related to Saturday's killing. In this case, they are asking the public to come forward with information that could lead to an arrest.
