Friday Storms Leave Thousands Without Power Around Area

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Storms plowing through the area Friday night left thousands of customers without power.

At 7:20 p.m., there were more than 7,700 customers without power in the Public Service Electric & Gas service area in new Jersey, and nearly another 3,000 in the Jersey Central Power & Light coverage area, WCBS 880 reported.

Most customers' power had been restored by 9 p.m., although Jersey Central Power & Light still reported nearly 2,900 customers without power by that time.

On Long Island, more than 1,900 customers were affected.

CHECK: Forecast

The entire area was clobbered with torrential downpours late Friday afternoon, and many commuters were also caught in serious delays as the rain pounded expressways.

CBS2's Lonnie Quinn reported the fast-moving storms dropped .89 inches of rain in Central Park, .63 inches in Somerville, New Jersey, and 1.43 inches in Islip, Long Island.

Skies are clearing overnight and by sunrise, the area will be high and dry, CBS2 Chief Meteorologist and Weather Producer Giorgio Panetta. It will be a chilly start on Saturday tough, with low to mid-50s around the city -- and with 40s and even some upper 30s in the coldest spots.
