Slippery Roads Across Tri-State Area Cause Pileups
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- More winter weather is on the way for the Tri-State Area.
CBS 2's Lonnie Quinn forecast Monday evening that the snow will arrive in New York City between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Much of the region will be blanketed will two to four inches of snow, said Quinn. Some spots south of the city could see four to six inches.
Ahead of the snow, the NYC Department of Sanitation said it was declaring a "snow alert" for Tuesday. That means snow clearing trucks may be needed and garbage pickups may be delayed.
Officials said it's possible ramps, bridges and overpasses will re-freeze as temperatures continue to dip Monday night.
The storm is forecast to be out of the area by mid-afternoon, said Quinn.
A mixed bag of weather confronted commuters Monday morning after a weather system overnight brought snow, freezing rain and sleet across the Tri-State area.
Police said slippery road conditions contributed to a pileup involving about two dozen vehicles in Yonkers.

Westchester County police said the accident happened shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday on the Bronx River Parkway near Desmond Avenue.

"It's scary, very scary," Daniel Pereira, who was involved in the crash, told CBS 2's Weijia Jiang. "When you're over the ice, there's nothing you can do."
Many of the cars were totaled, including Pereira's Nissan Maxima.
"It looked like a scene out of the 'Terminator' movies," said Jim Cavagnaro with APOW towing. "The only thing missing was fire and robots."
In all, about 45 people were taken to area hospitals. Most are still recovering from their injuries, which range from minor to serious.
The road was closed during most of the overnight hours, but re-opened just before the morning rush.
Police also reported two minor three-car accidents on the parkway near White Plains early Monday. A five-car pileup also was reported on the Saw Mill River Parkway.
Some schools in Westchester, Putnam and Orange counties had a 2-hour delayed opening due to the wintry weather. Some northern Westchester schools were closed.
In New Jersey, speed restrictions are in place on some roads.
"It's very icy out," Shakira Baker from Paterson told CBS 2's Kathryn Brown. "The roads are slippery."
A car slid off the road and into a light pole on Route 46 in Clifton. The driver was injured and had to be rushed the hospital.
Southern New Jersey got most of the snow. The National Weather Service says unofficial observations show 11 inches fell in Penns Grove, 9 inches in Beachwood, 7 inches in Woodbury and 6 inches in Blackwood.
NJ TRANSIT is cross-honoring tickets system-wide until the end of the service day on Monday.
Customers can use any NJ TRANSIT ticket or pass on rail, light rail or bus routes, including private bus carriers. The agency says it is trying to minimize delays and ensure full service in the wake of Sunday's wallop of winter weather.
In Conn., a multi-vehicle crash closed part of Interstate 95 for about two hours as road conditions turned slippery.
The crash happened late Sunday night in the southbound lanes between exits 4 and 5 in Greenwich. State police dispatch said early Monday that about 20 vehicles were involved with six injuries reported. None of the injuries appeared to be serious.
