Woman Defies Freeport Village Ban On Distributing Goods To Needy; Village Claims Goods Were Expired

FREEPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A food fight is brewing in one Long Island town.

Food bank manager Joanna Bell-Richards told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs the Freeport Village officials are wrong to ban her from distributing food and supplies to senior citizens in need.

Village officials, however, allege Bell-Richards has been handing out expired items.

But Bell-Richards said the village's claims are not true and that the village is confusing the sell by date with the expiration date.

"They never should have went this far and I am just totally shocked," she said.

Bell-Richards is defying the ban and is still distributing to those in need. She said she's hoping the village recognizes and fixes the problem.
