NYC Councilman Proposes Free Meter Parking On All Legal Holidays
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City Councilman Vincent Gentile is introducing a bill that would suspend the need to pay parking meters on all legal holidays.
"It's probably one of the biggest complaints I get from constituents, alternate side parking is suspended, why aren't the meters suspended as well, because people presume that's the case, and then they get ticketed," Gentile said.
Gentile's measure would allow free parking at meters for around 35 additional days per year, including President's Day, Martin Luther King Day and Veteran's Day, WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported. There would also be free parking for a number of Christian, Jewish and Muslim holidays, as well as Election Day and the Lunar New Year.
"Under the current rules, we currently have a "gotcha" system and drivers are sitting ducks for ticket agents," Gentile said in a statement released on Tuesday.
The bill is set to be introduced to City Council on Wednesday.
