Francesa: Rex And Marrone Are The Top Coaching Candidates? What Am I Missing?
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Rex Ryan was, not unexpectedly, fired by the Jets on NFL's "Black Monday," and owner Woody Johnson is currently looking for a new head coach.
Johnson -- along with consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf -- are searching high and low for Ryan's replacement, but WFAN host Mike Francesa isn't too enamored with the crop of coaches who are being considered for jobs.
"It's stunning how bad the head-coaching candidate pool is right now," Francesa said on Sunday. "Think about it. The two top candidates in this year's group -- other than (Dan) Quinn in Seattle -- are guys with losing records who have done absolutely nothing in recent years. Rex Ryan's coming off a four-win season.
"He hasn't made the playoffs his last four years, and he's a hot candidate for these jobs!"

Ryan is reportedly a candidate for the Falcons and 49ers jobs. He's also being considered by the Bills after Doug Marrone opted out of his contract and became a free agent.
Marrone is, in addition to Quinn, considered an early favorite to replace Ryan in New Jersey.
"Marrone, I mean, am I missing something?" Francesa said. "Or is that the guy who was coaching the Bills, who needed to beat the Oakland Raiders in Week 16, and they couldn't beat the Oakland Raiders to secure a playoff spot? That's the hot candidate? Two years in the league, losing record.
"The guy laughing right now is (Patriots head coach) Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick is saying, 'Wait a second. We dominate this division and they're gonna swap coaches on the teams that finish behind us every year?' ... Think about that for a second! What must they be thinking in New England?"
The Jets are also looking for a new general manager, as John Idzik was fired after just two seasons at the helm.
