Four-Alarm Fire Rips Through Crown Heights Home
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A dozen people had to be rescued by firefighters, as a four-story home in Brooklyn went up in flames around 2:15 Monday morning.
The four-alarm fire consumed a home on Carroll Street just off Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights.
"It originally came in as heavy fire on the second floor on arrival and it quickly spread. It was the A wing, which is the left side of the building in the front. It quickly spread to the third [and] fourth floors, right through the floors," FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Jack Mooney told CBS 2.
More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze and finally brought it under control before 5 a.m.
"It's really scary because it actually happened, the same apartment was on fire twice in a row, the same exact apartment. I think they were fixing it and there might have been an electrical fire. And it spread from the second to the third to the fourth and there were flames, bright orange and red flames coming out, it was crazy," one witness told CBS 2's Jennifer McLogan.
Authorities said at least 10 firefighters were injured in the blaze. No residents were seriously hurt.
Some of the firefighters were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Another firefighter suffered several burns to his body.
"Blazes coming out of the windows...we got a call actually from somebody to check if their mother was still inside, happened to be his mother was still on the right side of the building. We did let the firefighters know, they got out safely thank God," another witness told McLogan.
The fire marshal is on scene to determine if the cause of the fire is suspicious.
