Former Rep. Giffords Visits Upstate Gun Show, Speaks Out Against Violence
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords came to a gun show in upstate New York Sunday, arguing that more needs to be done to stop gun violence.
Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, toured the gun show at the City Center in Saratoga Springs, to examine a new policy in New York State that requires firearms to be tagged at gun show entrances.
Giffords, a former Democratic member of Congress from Arizona, was shot two years ago in Tucson while meeting with constituents. She was met with cheers, as well as boos, as she said greater action is necessary.
"Now is the time to come together," she said. "Be responsible – Democrats, republicans, everyone. We must never stop fighting. Fight, fight, fight! Be bold. The nation counts on you."
Six people, including federal Judge John Roll, were killed when a gunman opened fire at the shooting outside a supermarket near Tucson. Giffords was critically wounded with a gunshot wound to the head.
The gunman, Jared Loughner, pleaded guilty on all counts and was sentenced to life in prison.
Since stepping down from Congress, Giffords has focused on efforts to curb gun violence.
