Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch Leaves Hospital

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The man who some call New York's "mayor for life" was released from the hospital Friday.

Koch stood behind a podium in the lobby of NewYork–Presbyterian in Washington Heights, and took questions from reporters before he left.

He checked himself into the hospital earlier this week for anemia. On Friday, he left the hospital on his own, with only the aid of a cane.

Koch described himself as a lucky man in his 88th year, noting that his life has been spared many times. He has had a stroke and major heart surgery.

He said he has no fear of meeting his maker and while he calls himself secular, he believes prayer helped in his recovery. He noted that Timothy Cardinal Dolan even called him.

When he left the hospital, he was asked where he was going. His answer: to the office to check his mail.
