Former Nursing Home Nurse Accused Of Beating Patient
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A former nurse was indicted Wednesday on allegations that he punched and beat a disabled resident of the Bronx nursing home where he worked.
Lennox Seymour, 46, of Nanuet, was indicted and arraigned Wednesday on multiple charges, including endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person. If convicted, he faces up to four years in prison, the office of New York Attorney General Eric Scheniderman announced.
Seymour was a licensed practical nurse at the Split Rock Nursing Home at 3525 Baychester Ave. in the Bronx. Around 11 p.m. on Feb. 12, 2012, he was allegedly caught on tape following the 55-year-old disabled man into the dining hall, pushing him against a wall, and punching him in the neck, according to the Attorney General's office.
A struggle ensued and the men fell onto the floor, the office said. But Seymour walked away and left the nursing home resident behind with injuries to his neck and buttocks, according to the office.
Seymour was also charged with falsifying a report to the nursing home where he worked that is allegedly contradicted by the tape. He claimed the resident punched and kicked him after he took away the resident's carton of milk, the office said.
Soon after the nursing home reviewed the tape, Seymour was fired, the office said.
"The defendant, a licensed caregiver, was entrusted with the protection and well-being of a disabled nursing home resident. He violated that trust by attacking his own patient," Schneiderman said in the release. "My office will punish those who commit crimes against our most vulnerable neighbors."
The surveillance video that allegedly shows the beating has not been released.
