Former NJ Deacon Accused Of Stealing From Poor Due In Court
CRESSKILL, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A former deacon accused of stealing money from a New Jersey church is due in Bergen County Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutors say John Looby stole $53,000 from a parish charity account and used the money to pay for airline tickets and credit card bills.
He worked at the Saint Therese Lisieux Catholic Church in Cresskill, but resigned about a year ago and moved to a suburb of Austin, Texas.
The theft was discovered during a routine audit by the Archdiocese of Newark.
Looby was arrested in Texas last week and released without bail. He had agreed to return voluntarily to return to Bergen County to face charges.
