Report: Mayweather Wants To Fight Pacquiao Again Next Year
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Hey, why not?
Fresh off his decisive victory in Las Vegas on Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather Jr. told ESPN that he'd be willing to fight Manny Pacquiao again, perhaps in 2016.
"I will fight him in a year after his surgery," Mayweather told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith by text on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Mayweather used his reach and his jab to frustrate Pacquiao, piling up enough points to win a unanimous decision in their welterweight title bout. The 38-year-old, five-division champion remained unbeaten in 48 fights with a win that cemented his legacy as the best of his generation.
It was later learned that Pacquiao (57-6-2) went into the fight with a significant shoulder injury, a development that could lead to disciplinary action against the 36-year-old southpaw.
Nevada Athletic Commission chairman Francisco Aguilar said Monday that the state attorney general's office will look at why Pacquiao checked "no" a day before the fight on a commission questionnaire asking if he had a shoulder injury.
Pacquiao, who was expected to have surgery soon to fix a rotator cuff tear, could face a possible fine or suspension for not answering the question accurately on a form he filled out just before Friday's weigh-in.
"We will gather all the facts and follow the circumstances," Aguilar said. "At some point we will have some discussion. As a licensee of the commission you want to make sure fighters are giving you up-to-date information."
Not long after dominating Pacquiao in what was the richest fight ever, Mayweather reiterated that he was going to retire in September. That plan, at least for now, appears to be on hold.
