Fleet Week Events Continue Through Memorial Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Fleet week is in full force on this Memorial Day, with several events scheduled for locals and tourists.
Two visiting ships, the Navy's amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima and the US Coast Guard cutter Reliance, will be open to the public for tours at Pier 88 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
About 3,000 Navy sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen sailed back into Manhattan for this year's event which runs until Tuesday. Over the weekend, hundreds of Marines took part in Marine Day in Battery Park.
Marines demonstrated weaponry, held pull-up competitions and posed for pictures with the public.
"This is great being to walk around and interact and talk to the guys," said one man. "It's just great to have them here."
"I'm three generations Marine Corps in my family," said one woman. "They're unbelievable, I can't thank them enough, so stop by every time you see someone in uniform and say thank you."
