Flatlands, Brooklyn Family Thinks Women Caught On Video Stole Their Dog
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn family was pleading Tuesday night with two women they think stole their dog just steps away from their home.
As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, the whole thing was caught on surveillance video.
The Flatlands, Brooklyn family, who did not want to be identified, spent the evening plastering their neighborhood with posters, desperate to find their missing Maltese named Luv-E.
The dog has been gone since Sunday, when contractors accidentally let her out.
"We walked, like, you know, dozens and dozens of blocks, you know, calling Luv-E's name; and then listening; calling," a man in the family said.
But now three days later, the family is fearing the worst after seeing surveillance video from neighbors near East 48th Street and Avenue I.
The video shows little Luv-E being approached by two women, who follow the dog around the corner, and then scoop her up and check for a tag -- appearing to do the right thing.
But the women then walk away without calling the phone number on the tag or speaking with any neighbors.
"Twenty yards away from my house, just getting ready to go back in, they picked him up, looked left, looked right, stood there, and did not go back and knock; did not come here," the family member said.
The family has been waiting for the women to call about Luv-E, but worry they have decided to keep the dog, or worse, to try to sell their family pet. The dog is a pricey five-pound, 10-year-old purebred.
"They didn't bother to turn around and look at any house," the family member said. "They just went their way with the dog, all bundled up."
And though Luv-E is microchipped, the chip is not a tracking device. Thus, there is no telling where the dog could be.
"Don't take our dog again, because she's very loving and caring to us," said a young girl in the family.
The family has checked local animal shelters, but Tuesday night, there was still no sign of their dog. They also filed a police report, and the NYPD tells CBS2 it is investigating.
